12 Days of Elizabeth Chan Daily Christmas Songs: #10 – Try To Have A Merry Christmas

“Try To Have A Merry Christmas” was written during a time of sadness and confusion in my life. I was at a personal and professional crossroads in my life. I was barely sleeping and eating through the days, my health took a bad turn from the stress that came at me from all angles.

After the passing of my uncle, it was even more clear and profound to me that you only get one shot in your life to go after what your passion is. Except when you’ve spent decades building a world, career, life and identity – how do you leave it all behind. How do you find peace with the decisions you make?

I often explore the theme of missing people during the holidays. I wrote this song for my cousin to give her a song to help her heal this Christmas.

It was an enormously hurtful time in my life, “Try To Have A Merry Christmas” was a song I wrote to highlight the hope that we all have in the holiday season to be a safe place, surrounded by loved ones and light, despite all we suffer during the 364 days of the year.

This has always been one of my favorite songs because in writing it, it helped me to forge a path towards what I love. It is also Andy’s favorite song.
