Happy New Year! Thank you 2013!

When I was a little girl, I used to write a letter to the past year as the ball dropped. I always felt anxious that the year was ending too soon. I have some of these letters still. They are very funny as they capture more of the anxiety than anything else. Guess back then I didn’t really like change – which is completely different today! I would say I’m still not a fan of endings, but I do love beginnings.

I’m so grateful for this past year. 2013 was such a learning and growing year and am so excited for 2014!

Something really cool happened to me today, and I wanted to share. I was running for a bus in Manhattan because I was late getting somewhere. It’s a “select service” express bus, and I rarely take the bus. I was holding my MetroCard and trying to catch the bus before it closed the doors. This woman, as if watching me from a side of a marathon, was waving a piece of paper in her hand to me, sensing my urgency. “Honey! Take this – you’re gonna need it!”

I really didn’t know what she was talking about, but she was adamant and I took the paper from her – I don’t even think I got to thank her. Turns out, you need to buy a special fare for this bus to hop on. She gave me her bus ticket receipt that would allow me to board the bus.

In that small moment, I realized her generosity. She doesn’t know it but in that instance – I figured out what my new years resolution would be. I really didn’t have one until that point. Thanks to this stranger, I wanted to be more like her. I want to be able to do more generous things this year. Not in the grandiose fashion, but much like this woman did for me. She really thought quick and didn’t even think twice. I want to be able to thank her by repaying it back into the universe. That is my resolution. Next year is my year of kindness.

2013 was the year of gratitude. I am ever so thankful for the new places, people and events I got to experience this year. It was also a hectic year. Even when I thought I couldn’t make it through and felt so over extended – somehow things pulled through and turned out ok. It did feel overwhelming at times. I learned a lot about myself and the world around me. Everyday was truly spent learning something new and it was a pleasure. All the hard work was really worth it. Love is the foundation of all great things. I truly have found what I love to do, found a fantastic support of amazing people around me and to work with. As the ball drops tonight, I’ll be in the city that I love with my family and with so much thanks and gratitude to usher me into the new year!

Happy New Year to everyone and see you in 2014!
