My New Struggles With Coffee

Coffee vs. Vocal Chords

Just like any marathon, I’ve been in full vocal training for the past year. I’ve been working a coach, luckily – one of the best in the business – to help me reach my goals for the next year and beyond. I feel lucky to be able to work with him, as he only chooses to work with some of the best musicians in the business – Bono, Mick Jagger, Whitney, Lady Gaga — Me 😉

Training your voice is like training for anything else. There are some sacrifices you have to make in order to succeed.

For me, one of the surprise sacrifices of my vocal training is my daily coffee.

Coffee can adversely affect your vocal chords – but without it, can adversely affect my brain. I am crazy about coffee. Even in the way that I select the bean, the proper storage of the bean, grind and coffee:water ratio — and of course the region in which the beans originate from. (Papua New Guinea anyone?)

I sing everyday, but Monday’s are particularly difficult for me to forego my beverage best friend.

So today, hopefully my coach doesn’t read this – I’m going to try and drink coffee before training. As an innocuous experiment of my own. I can already tell drinking coffee today was a mistake. Stay tuned!
