When the Christmas Tree goes down

I woke up having a great first day of the new year! Since Christmas, I had come down with the flu (thanks Santa ;)) and today was the first day I had been able to get up and out of the house and feel more normal. They say this winter is going to be a brutal flu season – I totally believe it and hope that everyone is able to be healthy.

There are a few rituals I have every year, one is to buy a fresh new calendar and notebook. Today I also had to take down my real Christmas tree. It had a terrific run, having been up since Thanksgiving. It had to be put away today because we had to for many reasons. At first I felt really responsible since I saw my neighborhood started the garden mulching program, and this new year is going to be quite a busy year and next week is no exception. Christmas has barely been over for a week before the work begins for next Christmas.

I do put up Christmas trees many times this year, but for some reason – this year my heart feels so heavy. 🙁 I took my Christmas tree down earlier than I have ever taken it down before. I’m feeling a bit of wistfulness. It usually starts when the last spin of the Christmas station happens, then its the taking down of the tree, then its all the beautiful decorations around the city start to be put away.

It’s always hard to see the season go so soon. Just like saying goodbye to the relatives we don’t see so often, they always have a place in our hearts. Christmas is that for me everyday.

On a positive note, because of this Christmas tree community mulching program in my neighborhood, it always smells like Christmas trees up through the early summertime. That’s because all the trees are mulched and spread across all the gardens and trees in the area. So somewhere around me, will be my Christmas tree saying hello to me soon.

There is always the possibility I can leave my Christmas up for 40 years like this man.  Maybe I should leave a tree up until I find I’ve accomplished my Christmas classic. What do you think? 😉
